Gaeltacht Bursaries

The annual Gaeltacht Bursary awards were presented tonight by Tyrone County Board of the GAA at Garvaghey centre.

Young people from thirty-three of Tyrone GAA clubs attended the function which was overseen by Cathaoirleach an Chontae, Michael Kerr. Ages ranged, from some children attending Bún Scoileanna to those at the upper end of Post Primary Education. The young people, numbering in excess of one hundred, will attend Gaeltacht colleges in Loch an Iúir, Rann na Feirste, Teileann, Machaire Rabhartaigh, Bún an Inbhír and on the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway. Courses will range from around a week to the normal three-week spell. The children, who attend fourteen of our post primary schools and one primary school will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the national language by living with a language which is spoken all day and every day. The children will live with local families in the Gaeltacht areas they have chosen to attend. The Irish language will be the language they will live with for the period they attend the colleges. They will attend normal school activities, recreational time and sporting activities all through the medium of the Irish language.

The number of children attending Gaeltacht courses in the areas, where the language is spoken daily, is testament to the level of interest which the language is currently experiencing and the level of importance which Tyrone County Board holds for its promotion and development.
