The Rock/ Slate Quarry Community and many others across Tyrone and beyond are in mourning following the sad passing of a real Rock and Tyrone Gael, Sean Ruddy R.I.P.

The sympathy of all Tyrone Gaels is extended to his wife Rosemary nee (McConnell), daughters Fiona and Lisa plus his son Barry.

Sean was a proud Rock, St Patricks man all his life and served his Club with distinction holding all the main positions within it, namely Club Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and PRO as well as County Committee delegate. Sean up until his sad passing was also one of the Club Trustees.

Sean played for the Rock for many years and one of his greatest moments was to captain the Rock to Junior Championship glory in the 1982 Final victory over Eskra. Sean lined out in Goals that day, having been part of the group who stepped forward to resurrect the Club after its demise in the 1970’s. Since then he was central in building the St Patrick’s into the powerful presence they now are, both on and off the field, moving from being without a team and without a home to winning Ulster titles and developing an exemplary GAA complex.

Sean during his lifetime of service to the GAA also acted as the Club referee having taken up the whistle after finishing his playing career. Sean was a great friend to Referees and went on to become Chairperson of the Tyrone Referees Committee and acted as Tyrone Referees Administrator. Sean’s passion was the GAA and he held many different roles in the promotion of GAA affairs.

One special trait which Sean possessed was his warm friendly and unassuming character and he loved nothing more than a chat about what was happening on the GAA scene. A visit to the Rock would always include a warm welcome and a trusted handshake from Sean.

Sean has left his mark on a community which he was proud of and the GAA have lost a man who went out of his way to promote all that is good about his Community and his GAA.

Sean’s son Barry has picked up the mantle from where his father left off and none more proud was Sean to see Barry take up the role of Club Secretary and equally to see him help to lead the Rock to Tyrone Junior Championship Glory in 2019 as a team selector.
