A feast of the Irish Language in Garvaghey

The myth that Garvaghey was for the sole promotion of Gaelic Football and Hurling was very clearly displayed with the Ulster Finals of the Gael Linn sponsored public speaking competition done totally through the medium of the Irish Language.
A total of twelve post primary schools, all from the old traditional 10 county province of Ulster, competed against each other. Schools from the Irish medium, or Gaelscoileanna, the traditional second level schools were present – from An Dún, An Lú, Doire, Tír Eoghain, Dún na nGall, Muineacháin, Ard Mhacha agus Aontroim.
The young people present spoke on many topics, with fluency and passion on a range of subjects varying from the elections, Justice, American Presidents, Countess Markievicz and the Easter Rising, Brexit, 1916 and many more. In fact talks on twenty eight different topics were delivered and not a word of English spoken for nearly three hours. The national language is alive and flourishing in the schools and colleges of Ulster. Maith sibh ar fad.
Of equal importance was the president of Cumann Lúth-Chleas Gael Aoghan Ó Farrell complimented the efforts of all present who spoke at the event. It is equally heartening that a person with such a busy schedule, as the president, would give time to come and speak at such a function.
Many congratulations are due to all the speakers, teachers, schools, Gael Linn officials and Uachtarán CLG who made this event such a memorable occasion.
It is hoped that such an event as this will develop further the use of the Irish Language in Tír Eoghain. We can look forward with eager anticipation any such further events in Garvaghey.
