Primate Dixon P.S. Coalisland provided the wonderful setting for the opening round of a county-wide series of Girls’ Outdoor Gaelic Football heats. The summer term sees our games moving onto grass pitches and the welcome feel of fresh air. This follows on from a very successful series of Indoor events held during Term 2. As befits this time of the year, the sun shone on all the participants.
It was with a great deal of excitement and eagerness that girls representing six local schools gathered at the Coalisland venue. The format of the day’s play was based on a round-robin series of matches whereby each school got to play each other. This ensured everyone got to play a total of five games. The participating schools were:
• St. Patrick’s PS, Ardboe
• Roan PS, Eglish
• Gaelscoil Uí Neill, Clonoe
• Primate Dixon PS, Coalisland
• St. Peter’s PS, Moortown
• St. Patrick’s PS, Dungannon
As was evidenced during our Indoor games, the standard of play in the Outdoor arena was equally high. The girls relished the opportunity to showcase their undoubted talents and skills. It soon became apparent that very little separated the teams, as the girls battled for ultimate honours.
Great praise must go to the 6 teams for the sporting manner in which they competed. They were a credit to their schools.
Two schools made it through to the play-off final, as they attempted to win the heat and, with it, the Allianz Centenary Shield. The two schools were Primate Dixon PS and St Peter’s PS. After a tremendous tussle, it was the Moortown girls who came out on top in a pulsating final – much to the joy of teacher / Coach Mrs Martina Devlin. This success meant Master John Quinn’s loughshore side had achieved the ‘double’ of winning titles Indoor and Outdoor. A truly remarkable feat!
Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Tír Eoghain congratulates the Moortown team, who now take their place in the county final to be held 18 June in Garvaghey. The finals should be a joy to behold…
A special word of thanks goes to Tyrone referee, Marty Devlin, for his expert officiating. Our gratitude is also extended to Mr Sean Dillon (Principal) and Master McQuaid for hosting and organising the heat so professionally at Primate Dixon PS.Moortown PS Girls
