ALLIANZ CUMANN na mBunscol
INDOOR CAMOGIE: TYRONE FINAL
The wonderful facility that is the Station Centre, Omagh, provided the setting for the eagerly awaited Final of the annual Allianz Cumann na mBunscol ‘Indoor Camogie’ competition. Five schools within Tyrone had won their local heats, thus paving the way to this big day – one of the highlight days in the Primary School GAA calendar.
Each school got to play each other in a highly competitive 5 team Round-Robin series of matches. The closeness of the encounters was demonstrated by the fact that no team went unbeaten on the day. The teams from Primate Dixon PS Coalisland and Our Lady of Lourdes PS, Greencastle, expended every once of energy in their efforts to get into that top two. However, despite giving it everything, the girls from both schools were to fall just short of achieving their objective.
A dramatic turn of events saw a play-off for the teams from Derrylatinee and Roan PS. After some captivating camogie, the girls from St. Patrick’s PS, Roan, narrowly missed out on a top-two berth, with the St. Francis PS girls from Derrylatinee edging a thrilling contest on a 3-1 score line. It was a case of déjà vu for Master McCreesh and his charges, who were left ruing their play-off misfortune. These girls showed plenty of skill and commitment to suggest that they will come back stronger again next year. Therefore, it was a second placed finish for Derrylatinee PS, and the satisfaction of being one of the top two ‘Indoor camogie’ school teams in Tyrone.
Meanwhile, one team managed to win three out of their four games, and in so-doing, secured for themselves top spot in the League table. That school was St. Columbkille’s PS, Carrickmore. The ‘Carmen’ girls bounced back from a nervy opening game defeat at the hands of Derrylatinee PS, to secure three sensational, consecutive wins. These talented girls from Carrickmore were duly crowned Allianz Cumann na mBunscol ‘Indoor Camogie’ Tyrone Champions 2014!
A special word of thanks goes to all accompanying teachers and team mentors.
Our appreciation also goes to our referees, Mickey Glover and Declan Sherlock.
To our Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Ulster Chairman, Mickey Quinn; secretary Niall McQuaid (Coalisland) for organising the tournament, and to CnmB PRO and games’ co-ordinator, Eddie Doris, a word of thanks.
Finally, well done to St. Columbkille’s PS, Carrickmore. They now have the honour of representing Tyrone in the Ulster Finals, to be held in Newry. We wish them well.
A truly memorable day for all involved. Congratulations!
