Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Thír Eoghain sent their county champions to the Ulster Indoor Camogie and Hurling Finals in Magherafelt’s splendid Meadowbank Sports Centre this week. This tournament is the pinnacle for primary schools across the province. Representing Tyrone, we had St. John’s PS, Kingsisland, in the Camogie, and St. Patrick’s PS, Dungannon in the Hurling.
St. John’s PS, Kingsisland, began their Ulster campaign in confident form. Indeed, the girls topped their group which included the County Down champions and the County Fermanagh champions. Next up was a thrilling encounter with the County Antrim champions in the semi-final. Kingsisland took the lead and dominated the match. They were on course to clinch an Ulster final appearance only to concede a goal in the dying seconds. As the game entered a period of extra-time, the Kingsisland girls bombarded the Antrim goal with shot after shot. Unfortunately, a quick break away led to a goal against and with it the end of the Kingsisland girls’ hopes of landing the coveted title. People watching the game agreed that the girls were desperately unlucky to lose the semi-final. However, they can console themselves with the fact that they are 2015 Tyrone Champions and ranked amongst the top three in Ulster – a wonderful accolade!
St. Patrick’s PS, Dungannon, entered the Hurling campaign in the afternoon. They too began in a positive manner, qualifying from their section having seen-off the challenge from the Down and Fermanagh champions.
They played some scintillating hurling to earn a berth in the Ulster semi-finals. Things were shaping up nicely for the St. Patrick’s lads. Despite their valiant efforts, they just fell short against a very strong St. Anne’s PS, from Corkey, Co. Antrim. Nevertheless, the boys from Dungannon had a memorable year, collecting the 2015 Tyrone Indoor Hurling title and securing a top three finish in Ulster – a truly tremendous achievement!
Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Thír Eoghain wishes to thank their Derry counterparts for the excellent hosting of these terrific tournaments. A particular word of thanks to Kevin Toner from Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Doire, and to Enda Muldoon and his refereeing colleagues for a job well done.
Go raibh maith agaibh!
Kingsisland and Dungannon were both very worthy representatives for the Red Hand County. Masters O’ Neill and Muldoon can feel very proud of their respective teams. Both schools are an absolute credit to their families, schools, clubs and county. Maith sibh go léir!
