On Sunday in Croke Park, six great servants of the ancient game were immortalised, their names officially etched into the history of the Association.
Back in 2014, the GAA decided to name the cups presented to the winners of various hurling competitions in the U16, Minor and U21 grades.
After a consultation process and feedback from counties, the names of Richie McElligott (Ciarraí), Andrew O’Neill (Tír Eoghain), Peadar Ó Liatháin (An Mhí), Adrian Freeman (Maigh Eo) and Stephen Dorrigan (Liatroim) were selected.
The GAA is also using the occasion to recognise Adrian Murray (An Iarmhí), whose name adorns the All-Ireland U16B cup, which was presented to the GAA by his family a number of years back.
Ahead of Sunday’s Leinster final in Croke Park, in the presence of family members of those being remembered and Uachtarán CLG Aogán Ó Fearghail, the new cups were officially launched.
They will be presented to the winners of the various competitions for the first time this year, a fitting tribute to men who loved and lived for the game of hurling.
U21 C – Andrew O’Neill (Tír Eoghain)
Andrew O Neill was a young hurler from the Naomh Colm Chille club in Clonoe, Co. Tyrone who died tragically in Liverpool in 2010. He played at corner back on the Clonoe team that won their first championship in 2005.
