Big weekend for Tyrone in Ulster 40×20
Tyrone’s recent dominance of the Ulster 40×20 juvenile championships continued last weekend as the county ended the 2016 series with a magnificent total of 16 provincial titles, accounting for two thirds of the 24 titles on offer.
Tyrone featured in a total of 19 Ulster juvenile finals on Sunday in Kingscourt and suffered defeat in just three matches, with Eoin McElholm (under-12 singles), Jonathan Owens (under-13 singles) and the county’s under-15 doubles pair of Caolan McCartan and Barney Corcoran all losing narrowly in three of the most exciting finals of the day.
Of the honours that were won by Tyrone, ten came in the girls’ championships (out of 12) and six were in the boys grades, which was exactly half of the boys’ titles.
The remaining provincial titles were won by Monaghan, Cavan, Donegal, Armagh and Antrim.
Established Tyrone juvenile players such as Antoin Fox, Cormac Munroe, Lorcan McBride, Ciaran Cuddy, Caitlin Conway, Ciara Mullin, Elizabeth McGarvey, Mairead Fox, Clodagh Munroe, Cahir Munroe and Cloda McNamee all came through their respective provincial campaigns successfully, as expected.
And it was particularly pleasing to see success coming the way of Killyclogher and Pomeroy, with Killyclogher coach Barney McAleer witnessing two of his sons, Brian and Tiernan, securing hard fought doubles victories, the latter teaming up with clubmate Rian McCaul to win the match of the day at under-17 doubles.
Other notable family achievements were recorded by the Fox trio, Antoin, Mairead and Dearbhail, and the three Munroes, Cormac, Cahir and Clodagh, while the Owens brothers, Conor and Jonathan, were unlucky not to complete a double on the day.
Tyrone will now go forward to represent Ulster in no fewer than eleven All-Ireland juvenile championship semi-finals (from under-14 to under-17) this weekend against the Connacht champions, with home advantage guaranteed.
