The annual Cabragh Cup, held by St Mary’s P.S. Cabragh, took place on Monday 13th June in Kennedy Park, Killeeshil for the 32nd year.
Ten schools took part in one of the longest running tournaments in South Tyrone across the day; hosts Cabragh, Edendork, Galbally, Pomeroy and Donaghmore made up Section 1 (large schools) while Roan, Ballygawley, Glencull, Aughnacloy and Aughadarragh made up the schools in Section 2 (small schools). After a great morning of football, Master Joe Kelly’s Galbally came top of their section on score difference (a tie with Master Peter Harte’s Donaghmore side) while Master Mc Creesh’s Roan side came top in Section 2.
Cabragh and Edendork competed in the Cabragh Shield final and despite being 8 points behind at half time, Master Damian Kelly’s Cabragh side stormed back in the second half to pip Edendork at the post and lift the shield.
In the Cabragh Cup final, a spirited Donaghmore side, who beat Roan in the dying seconds of their semi-final, took on parish rivals St Joseph’s Galbally in the final. After two periods of end to end action, it was St Patrick’s Donaghmore who came out the eventual winners and the cup returned home for the second year in a row with them. Well done to all the children and their teachers.
A special presentation was also made at the end of the tournament by all the local primary school teachers to Master Damian Kelly who is ‘hanging up his boots’ as St Mary’s P.S. Cabragh principal after 36 years of service. We wish him all the very best in his retirement. He leaves behind a legacy that will live long in the collective memories of children and pupils alike. Go raibh mile maith agat, a mháistir! Ádh mór ort.
