St Columbkille’s PS, Carrickmore retain Girls’ 5 a side indoor trophy.
The girls from St Columbkille’s PS, Carrickmore are once again the winners of the Tyrone 5 a side indoor competition after defeating a gallant Primate Dixon, Coalisland team by 2 goals to 1 at the Station Centre, Omagh on Friday morning.
Eight Primary schools, who had qualified from their heats in previous weeks, played out the finals demonstrating the same competitiveness and skill level which their male counterparts had shown in the equivalent competition two days earlier at the same venue. There also to try to claim the coveted crown were Gaelscol Ui Neill, Coalisland, St Patrick’s PS, Dungannon, Roan St Patrick’s PS, Eglish, Holy Trinity PS, Cookstown, St Mary’s PS, Cabragh and St Patrick’s PS, Castlederg.
Stevie McNamee once again was the man in the middle as the two finalists got past St Mary’s Cabragh and Holy Trinity Cookstown to set up an exciting contest in which the Carmen girls emerged victorious by the narrow margin of 2 goals to 1. For the losing Coalisland finalists there were excellent displays from goalkeeper Kerri Fee, defender Momhaine McNamee and Megan Woods in front of goal, while the winning team were served well by Clare McGarrity in goals, Mairead McGarrity in defence and Meabh McCallan in midfield.
Thirty primary schools across the county entered this competition at the start, so all eight schools who took part in the county finals, should be very proud of their achievements and prove to be an inspiration to the pupils who will no doubt follow in their footsteps in the years to come.
