Strabane Sigersons G.A.A. hosted a very successful Danny Rouse Minor Boy’s Memorial Blitz @ Páirc Mhic Sioghair (Sigerson Park) last Saturday afternoon with four teams in attendance. The host club Strabane, Urney St Columba’s, Newtownstewart St Eugene’s and Drumragh Sarsfield’s were the four participants and each team were guaranteed three games which was excellent preparation for the start of the forthcoming Tyrone Minor League campaign. The weather was very kind for the event and the pitches were in excellent condition despite the recent snow and frost.
Strabane and Drumragh qualified for the final courtesy of wins over both Urney and Newtownsteart and the final itself was a closely contested affair with Strabane edging the contest 1-4 to 0-3 to ensure that the title remained with the hosts.
Following the final, Aodhán Harkin Sigersons G.A.A. Project Co-ordinator thanked all four clubs for their attendance, the referees and all those who assisted with the organisation and running of the event.
He also went on to speak about the contribution that the late Danny “Bomber” Rouse had made to Strabane Sigersons during his tenure as club manager and coach over the years and the type of great character that he was with his wit and humour.
His widow Eileen and many of Danny’s extended family circle were in attendance and they were thanked for their kind support over the past few years since the event was initiated. Eileen alongside Sigersons club stalwart Tom Brown then presented Strabane captain Mark McAdams with the Memorial Shield and all of the winning panel also received commemorative medals.
A special word of thanks was extended to Sigersons Youth Officer Jason Foley for his organisation of the event and to all those who lent him any assistance.
Warmest thanks were also extended to the two referees for the event; Shane Meehan (Glenelly) and Aidan Graham (Owen Roes) and to all those who acted as linesmen and umpires.
