Ulster Bank McDevitt Cup U-14 Football – quarter-final Result (@ Aghadrumsee)
Referee; Jim O’Rourke [Monaghan]
Dean Maguirc College Carrickmore overcame the challenge presented by Breifne College, Cavan in the quarter final of the McDevitt Cup. The Dean played against a swirling breeze in first half in excellent playing facilities in Aghadrumsee. Initially both teams found it difficult to adjust to the elements. However, it was the Dean and Ciaran Daly who opened their account first with a couple of well taken points. Breifne’s chief threat Eoghan Cooney was able to keep tabs with the Dean on the scoring stakes until Ciaran Cuddy hit the net just before the interval. A further point from a shot on the ground from Cuddy saw Dean Maguirc lead at half time by the score of 1-4 to 0-4. The Cavan College were left to rue two magnificent saves from the Dean’s goalkeeper Oisin O’Kane preventing certain goals on each occasion.
Breifne College got out of the blocks quicker in the second half, however, after a period of dominance it was the Dean’s defence which came out on top holding them scoreless during this period. Conal Grimes was peerless throughout the second half containing the Cavan School’s chief scoring threat Eoghan Cooney. This allowed the Dean to rattle off six unanswered points with Daly, Corcoran, Cathaoir Gallagher and Sean Kerr the chief marksmen. With the wind slightly to their advantage Dean Maguirc were able to press home their advantage and even a missed penalty and a late goal from Breifne was not enough to upset their rhythm.
Enda Kilpatrick and Terry McCann’s side now await the winners of St. Mark’s, Warrenpoint and St. Paul’s, Lurgan in the semi-final of the competition which is scheduled to be played towards the end of next week.
