St Macartans almost staged the comebacks of all comebacks as they came back from seven ponts down only to eventually lose by a single point to Errigal Ciaran in a pulsating Patrick Fahy Solicitors Tyrone Ladies senior football final at Killyclogher on Saturday evening. Going into the closing stages Errigal led by those seven points, a converted penalty from Maria Canavan following goals from Shannon Monaghan and the impressive Lycrecia Quinn looked to have been enough for the Dunmpyle side. There was a late twist as Paula Donnelly and Chloe McCaffery managed to get through what had been previously hard to break down Errigal defence deep into injury time.
The Macartan’s will rue a raft of missed chances, four wides on the bounce in a three minute first half spell, they did come up against a well organised Errigal who had a game plan and stuck to it throughout much to their credit. It was a night when the Errigal forwards delivered and the defence turned in a stunning display for the best part of the sixty minutes
Errigal led 1-4 to 0-4 at the break, Lycrecia Quinn finding the net with Joiline Donnelly 0-3 and young Chloe McCaffery pointing for the Macs.
Shannon Monaghan’s goal just after the restart built a massive head of steam for Errigal although St Macartan’s turned up the heat and enjoyed most of the second half possession closing the gap to four with Cathy Donnelly also on the scoresheet.
The Dunmoyle side created a couple of goal chances and when Aine Canavan was upended and Maria Canavan hit the net from the resultant penalty it looked all over with injury time beckoning. Seven points the gap and even when Selina Oguz missed from close range Errigal still looked home and hosed but there was a mammoth twist with those two late goals. Time though ran out and its Errigal crowned senior champions.
