Leah Carmody daughter of Mike (Tarbert, Co Kerry) and Aileen nee Mc Shane (Strabane, Co Tyrone) who reside in New York was hospitalised after taking what appeared to be a harmless tumble at school.
Following routine testing it was discovered that Leah who is 5 years old had a brain tumour. This required a shunt in her skull to relieve the pressure. She underwent two biopsies but suffered a stroke, affecting her memory and leaving her partially paralyzed.
She faces at least a year of chemotherapy and requires extensive physical and cognitive therapy. Medical expenses for Leah’s ongoing treatment will exceed $2 million.
