Championship showdown time in Tyrone
These are very exciting times in Tyrone GAA Handball, following an unprecedented year of success in 2013, and the hugely exciting Tyrone Attic Stairs championships are about to reach fever pitch. The weekend ahead will bring a number of County Adult finals and on Saturday in Loughmacrory will bring the Juvenile County Championship Finals day with action concluding that evening in Beragh with the Senior Singles Championship Semi finals.
Firstly in the Adult championships, there will be two singles titles won on Friday night in Loughmacrory where the finals of the Junior and Senior B Singles competitions will reach a conclusion. A highly competitive Junior Singles Championship saw the semi finals go ahead last weekend and Carrickmore’s Ruairi Gorgan and Brackey’s Eamon McCrory book their place in the final. Grogan overpowered Breacach teenager, Jack Campbell by 21-11, 21-8 and McCrory got the better of his club colleague, Mark McCartan by 21-12, 21-13.
The Senior B Singles championship is currently at the last four stage with Breacach’s Niall Kerr and Carrickmore’s Ryan Daly meeting in the first of the semi finals with Patrick McCrory (Carrickmore) to face either Caolan Daly or Barney Corcoran in the other semi final. The finals of the Junior and Senior B Singles Championships will form an exciting double bill in Loughmacrory on Friday night from 7pm.
Senior Singles Championship action
The Tyrone Attic Stairs Mens Senior Singles Championship is at the penultimate stage of action and two cracking ties will unfold in Beragh on Saturday evening from 6pm. Premier League champion, Shane O’Neill, continued his winning streak in the county as he overcame Ryan Daly by 21-12, 21-11 in their quarter final meeting at the weekend. Darragh Daly claimed his semi final place with a 21-6, 21-12 win over Johnny Woods. Their meeting promises to be an epic tussle with the other semi final another intriguing tie involving rising young stars, Conor McElduff and Gabhain McCrystal. McElduff had a very impressive quarter final victory over Carrickmore’s Caolan Daly, booking his final ticket with a 21-17, 21-12 win and meets recently crowned US National Champion, McCrystal, whose form continues to go from strength to strength. He had a titanic struggle with Patrick McCrory in their quarter final meeting, before winning through by 21-7, 20-21, 11-6.
The Junior B Singles Championship will also be down to the semi final stages by the weekend and the final of that event will be staged in Carrickmore on Sunday (19th January) at 5pm. The Mens 35+ Singles Championship will then get underway from Monday evening (20th January) and the Senior and Junior Doubles Championship will also kick into gear from next week. There is no doubt this is a hugely busy time on the domestic championship scene for Tyrone GAA Handball and of course there are the Ulster Championships which have also now commenced and feature many of the O’Neill County stars in key games in the coming days. Five times Ulster Senior Champion, Ciaran Curran, makes his return to Mens Open Singles action and he will meet Tyrone’s Darragh Daly on Friday evening in round one while Shane O’Neill will take on Armagh’s Charly Shanks, who was returns from a two year spell in the USA where he reached number one on the US WPH Pro circuit.

Juvenile Finals take centre stage
One of the most exciting days of the year on the tyrone GAA Handball club scene is Juvenile Singles Championship Finals day and this Saturday there will be 11 County Finals to whet the appetite, with the action commencing from 12pm in Loughmacrory. Following a series of excellent matches throughout the past number of weeks, including the juvenile leagues pre-christmas, all Juvenile A Championship Grades are now down to the final across the board. The Juvenile finals day will get underway at 12 noon with the Boys Under 12 final involving highly promising young Carrickmore players, Cahir Munroe and Tiernan McGarrity and will be followed by the She’s Ace Girls Under 12 final with Loughmacrory’s Mairead Fox facing Sarah Devlin.
At Under 13 level, there is an intriguing match-up involving Irish Nationals and World champion, Lorcan McBride against Loughmacrory’s Dara Curran and in the girls code it will also be a rpeat of the 2013 final from under 12 as Loughmacrory’s Caitlin Conway faces Breacach’s Elizabeth McGarvey.
Following a hugely competitive Boys Under 14 championship, Antoin Fox has been ruled out due to injury and Carrickmore’s Cormac Munroe, who went unbeaten in the championship rounds, faces young Darragh Canavan in the County final. Carrickmore’s Ciara Mullan will be fancied to give her club a double in the age-group as she meets Breacach’s Gemma Conway in the She’s Ace Girls Under 14 Singles final. Carrickmore and Breacach are guaranteed the Boys and Girls Under 15 titles respectively as Ciaran Cuddy meets Conor Kelly in the boys final with Michaela McCartan and Chloe McAlinney in the girls decider.
The blue ribband event of the day is the Boys Under 16 Singles Championship final and there is no doubt this was one of the most competitive grades throughout the knock-out stages. Matthew McCartan booked his final place following a brilliant tussle with Pauric Mullan, which he won 21-17, 21-20 and will meet highly regarded Sean Kerr in the final. Kerr defeated Turlough Clarke by 21-7, 21-5 in the semi final and is bidding for a unique double in Tyrone having won the Division 3 league title at Adult level in December.
Eilise McCrory will be a warm order in the Girls Under 16 final against Loughmacrory’s Sinead Donnelly and the day’s action will conclude with the Boys Under 17 final involving Aaron Owens and Tiarnan McCrystal.
With this deciding the final Tyrone Juvenile team for 2014, there will be B Singles Championships, doubles championships and an exciting new programme of championships in singles and doubles/team events for the clubs at Under 10 level in the weeks ahead. Full details of these will be released following the county finals at the weekend.
