St. Oliver Plunkett PS Beragh has recently been a recipient of Active Schools funding to run its ‘Handball’s 4 All’ programme. Active Schools is a small grants programme developed, funded and administered by Sport NI that aims to assist projects that enable the delivery of new and sustained opportunities for children and young people to participate in two hours per week of extra-curricular sports and physical recreation. ‘Handball’s 4 All’ has enabled a one wall to be installed in the school hall, handball equipment to be purchased and all pupils in Years 5, 6 & 7 have been offered an 8 week programme of after school handball coaching by coaches from the local Brackey Handball Club. Many pupils have taken up the opportunity and are making great progress with the skills of the game, are more physically active and just as important, are having great fun. The staff and pupils of St. Oliver Plunkett PS would like to thank Sport NI for their support in bringing this project to fruition.
Some of the school’s pupils competed and were successful in the recent Tyrone Cumann na mBunscol Handball Competition. Dervla Farley won the U-11 Girls’ Singles competition whilst Jack Darcy collected the U-11 Boys’ Singles title. Both pupils will now go forward to represent their school and county in the upcoming Ulster competition. All involved with the school extend their best wishes to both Dervla and Jack.
