Tyrone 1-9 Galway 0-9
Stephen Dooher’s 40th minute goal proved all-important as Tyrone denied Galway a four-in-a-row to capture their first All-Ireland Masters football title at Drumlish, Co. Longford this afternoon.
Dooher, who’s a cousin of former All-Ireland senior winning captain Brian, fired past goalkeeper John Davitt after Galway had failed to clear their lines to set the Red Hands on the road to an historic victory. Peter Loughran was also outstanding as he became the first Tyrone man to win All-Ireland medals in the senior and Masters grades.
Galway looked to be on course to retain their title when three points from Fergal McEvoy and another from Olly Hynds helped them to a 0-4 to 0-2 interval lead. Tyrone captain Damian Gormley reduced the deficit to the minimum three minutes into the second half before the holders moved three clear again, 0-6 to 0-3.
But the Ulster side took the lead for the first time when another Gormley point was followed by Dooher’s major. Mark Donnelly (two), Stephen Lawn and Mickey McConomy tagged on further scores as Tyrone gained revenge for their 2013 final loss to the Westerners.
