The Tyrone county minor camogs played Donegal in the All Ireland Minor C Shield championship on Saturday in Garvaghey. It has been some years since a minor team has entered an All Ireland competition and expectations were high. The competition is league based with the top two teams progressing to the final. The other counties involved are Monaghan and Wicklow.
It was a very pleasant day without any wind as the game got under way. Donegal started the brighter and had much of the possession for the first five minutes but they were frustrated by a resolute Tyrone defence. The red hands soon got into their stride as Catherine Muldoon broke clear and slotted her first goal of game on six minutes. Donegal were unable to cope with pace of Muldoon as she added another two goals and a point within the next five minutes. To their credit Donegal fought for every loose ball but they looked out of depth at times and the scores just kept coming for Tyrone. Casey Gallagher added a goal and almost immediately Niamh Coyle took an excellent point. Roisin McErlean found the back of the net and a point for Niamh Faulker pilled on the pressure for the visitors.
It was on the twenty five minute mark that Roisin Toland got Donegals first point of the game. Tyrone had a few wides shortly after before Kira Donnelly added her first point to end the half Tyrone 6-4 Donegal 0-1.
The pressure was relentless on Donegal as the second half started with McErlean taking a point from a 45 metre free. McErlean found the back of the net with long range efforts as the scoreboard was kept ticking over. Donegal’s Niamh Doherty added what was their last point of the game on the ten minute mark. It was all over as a contest at this stage and further scores from Muldoon, McErlean, Aoife Morgan and Nichola McKeever ended a very one sided contest Tyrone 13-7 Donegal 0-2
Tyrone will now play Monaghan away on 12th March.
