Tyrone Ladies GFA have confirmed the appointment of a new senior management team. Derrytresk clubman Mickey Rea has been unveiled as the new manager with a backroom team which includes Cathal McGill (Clann na nGael), Aidan O’Kane (Dregish) and Louise Daly (Aodh Ruadh)
The management have been offered a three year term and their intention is clear from the outset with the focus on an All Ireland Senior title for the Red Hand girls. However, the new man at the helm is realistic stating, “it’s clear we are on a rebuilding mission first and foremost. The talent exists within the county but there will be a year of transition and it will be hard work for all concerned, but we are confident of what can be achieved” explained the Derrytresk club man. Rea has brought together a new look management team and Louise Daly’s involvement provides a link to last year’s Minor squad that reached the All Ireland Final. The management will meet with players ahead of Christmas with a training schedule and programme for the first part of the year. Tyrone will open their National League campaign on February 3rd with a trip to Mayo, so time is at a premium.
Ladies County Chairperson Martin Conway welcomed the appointment this week but also paid tribute to Gerry Moane, Aidan Connolly and Barry Grimes who stepped down after a frustrating year in charge, ” Gerry and his backroom team had a lot of issues to deal with last year including injuries to key players, plus players not making themselves available and often just a lack of commitment from some players. They gave it a shot and did trojan work throughout the year. They can’t be faulted but it was a tough task. Now with Mickey Rea it’s time for a fresh start. The management team are all new to senior inter county management but they have a clear path and I expect quite a few changes in the squad,”Rea has outlined a professional approach, making it clear, just like the County Chairperson, that there will be changes, ” It is a fresh start and hopefully a new era for Tyrone ladies football. We only want players who are totally committed to the cause and it would appear that some players from last year’s squad wont be back. No-one and I mean no-one will walk into this squad. Places will have to be earned and we know the calibre of player we want”. Rea’s plans are exciting and with Tyrone set to compete in the Ashling McGing tournament for the first time in 2013 it provides the opportunity for a raft of new players to step up and claim a place in the Senior squad.
County management teams at U14 and U16 level have also been confirmed. County Development Officer Angela Stevenson will lead the U14s this year helped by Roisin Devine, Michael Penrose, & Ryan McShane while Martin Conway and Desi Friel have stepped up from U14 to the U16 management position. It is hoped that the Minor management team will be confirmed within the next couple of days.
