The Tyrone Senior Footballers will have to plan without the services of Stephen O’Neill and Martin Penrose for the 2015 campaign after both men informed manager Mickey Harte of their retirement from Inter County Football.
After a Senior Inter-County career spanning 10 seasons, Martin Penrose finishes his Tyrone career having collected All Ireland titles at Senior level in 2005 & 2008. This goes along with an All-Ireland Minor medal in 2001, only being denied the full set following an All-Ireland U21 Final defeat to Dublin in 2003. An industrious forward with excellent free taking abilities, Martin was one of the first names on Mickey Harte’s teamsheet, making 137 appearances since his debut in 2005, including 48 in the Championship. Indeed, Martin holds a unique record in that he scored a goal in his first full start in each of the the McKenna Cup, National League and Senior Championship in 2005.
Making his Senior Inter-County debut against Down in 1999 while still at school, Stephen O’Neill went on to become one of the top forwards in the game. He claimed All Ireland titles at Senior (2003,2005,2008), Under 21 (2000, 2001) and Minor (1998) levels, he also went on to collect the Player of the Year award in 2005 as well as All-Stars in 2001, 2005 and 2009. In addition to this, Stephen also collected 2 National League and 5 Ulster titles. Betweeen 1999 and 2014, Stephen made 66 Championship appearances scoring 9-147. Stephen also has represented both his province and his country with distinction.
