The gates and doors of the Tyrone GAA Centre at Garvaghey will be thrown open to some very special American visitors on Tuesday afternoon, 25thJune, as the Under 14 footballers of Delaware County Gaels Ladies team visit the home of the GAA in the county.
Led by Augher native Mickey McMeel the travelling party of seventy-five will be greeted on arrival by the Chair of Tyrone LGFA in the county Donna McCrory, Peter Canavan Chair of Club Tyrone Overseas committee and a representation from the County Senior Ladies team.
After a short tour of the facilities the Delaware team will have the opportunity to stretch their legs at a skills session supervised by Tyrone U14 Ladies manager Kevin McCrystal.
The visit will culminate in a game between Delaware County Gaels and St Ciaran’s College Ballygawley at 1:30pm.
This visit marks the third time that Garvaghey has hosted an American GAA side as part of the Feile tournament in Ireland. Club Tyrone have been instrumental in developing, promoting and sustaining long term links with overseas units as Tyrone GAA PRO Eugene McConnell points out. “We are lucky to have established new Club Tyrone branches in London, New York, and Philadelphia in recent years. It’s very important that we are able to strengthen these links by opening up our doors to teams when they come to our shores. Organising these visits and following up on coaching and coach development work in and around our overseas branches is something we are fully committed to going forward.”
Delaware County Gaels follow in the footsteps of New York Ladies and Boys teams in visiting Garvaghey to play games over the last three years. The Delaware County Gaels side will be hosted by Sligo club St John’s Club in the John West Féile na nÓg National tournaments which will be held across Connacht on the weekend of 28th-30th June 2019.
