Allianz Football League Division II: Galway 0-13 Tyrone 1-14
Tyrone’s remarkable form in Division II continued as they beat Galway in Tuam on Sunday to secure their fifth straight win in the Allianz League, and seal their promotion to the top tier.
Peter Harte’s converted penalty early in the second half, which he won himself, was the decisive score as it put the Red Hand a goal ahead after what had been a very tight affair up to that point.
Shortly after the game began, there was a torrential shower of rain which seemed to come from nowhere after hazy sunshine had blazed down on the venue in the warm-up.
Tyrone led 0-5 to 0-4 after 20 minutes, thanks to efforts from Owen Mulligan, Martin Penrose and Martin Donnelly, while Nicky Joyce was Galway’s main threat once again, along with the impressive Gary Sice.
Tyrone went in two up at half-time after efforts from Mulligan and Kyle Coney, and Harte’s well taken penalty after the break was a big blow for Galway, given that it came on the back of two missed goal chances from Paul Conroy for the Tribesmen.
Coney then hit three magnificent points in succession to put Tyrone six ahead as they looked like they would easily pull away from Galway but Alan Mulholland’s men fought to the finish even though their efforts ultimately came up short.
The one blight for Tyrone was the sending off of defender PJ Quinn midway through the second half.
