Referees’ Strategy Launched

The GAA has unveiled a new Referee Development Plan which will underpin the role of referees and match officials within the Association for the next five years.
This plan is the culmination of work carried out by a number of groups under the guidance of Coiste na Réiteoirí and identifies and sets out the criteria that must be met in order for our referees to reach the highest levels.
It outlines a clear pathway for the development and progression of referees from club level right up to the inter-county scene.
In addition to a Strategy Outline, included in the report are sections outlining the Association’s Refereeing Structures, Training and Recruitment and Training for both Inter-County and Club referees.
Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Críostóir Ó Cuana lauded this initiative expressing the hope that this will put refereeing on a stronger footing for the next five years.
He said: “Anyone who interacts with our games, at any level, will appreciate the importance of referees in our games.
“While there is an onus on us to recognise their crucial role, there is also a responsibility on us to ensure that we offer our match officials every assistance in helping to become the best referees that they can be.
“This is a clearly defined and well structured plan and one that I believe will be to the betterment of everyone who already picks up the whistle or may be considering doing so over the life span of the plan, which runs for the next five years.”
Michael Curley, Chairman Coiste na Réiteoirí, added: “One of the most important aspects of our games is the contribution made by referees the length and breadth of the country and at all times throughout the year.
“That contribution, extending as it does from refereeing U12 games at Club level right up to senior All-Ireland Finals must always be recognised and this plan can assist in the overall promotion of the role of the referee in our Association.”
