Shamrocks Win McGurn Cup

FIVE teams who had taken part in the U-13 Coaching programme during recent weeks rounded off the initiative with the holding of the Jim McGurn Hurling Tournament, hosted by the Beragh club last weekend. Around 40 young hurlers from Strabane Shamrocks, Omagh, Cappagh, Beragh and Dromore all participated in the Jim McGurn Cup at St Mary’s Park. The tournament, which was organised on a blitz basis, provided the players with the chance to display their hurling skills in an enjoyable and competitive environment. The matches were refereed by Michael Glover, each team played each other once and in the final Strabane Shamrocks took on Cappagh. The game finished 1-3 to 1-1 for the Strabane side. Afterwards the Jim McGurn Cup, which commemorates a man central in the development of hurling and camogie in Beragh and West Tyrone during the 1930s, was presented by his daughter, Eithne McAnespy. Refreshments for the players and tea and sandwiches for the officials were also provided in the Red Knights Club pavilion, completing a memorable and worthwhile day for all concerned.
