Strabane District Council People First Sports Awards
The 2014 Strabane District Council People First Sports Awards were held in the Alley Theatre Strabane on Wednesday night past with the Minister for Culture, Arts & Leisure Carál Ní Chuilín, Tyrone G.A.A. legend Peter Canavan and former Olympic Athlete Ciarán Ward (Judo) in attendance as special guests. Also in attendance were West Tyrone M.P. Pat Doherty, Strabane District Council Chairperson Dan Kelly, Strabane District Sports Forum Chairperson Aodhán Harkin and Strabane District Council Sports Development Officer Aiden Lynch whilst Paddy Hunter from Q101.2 was the affable compere for what was a great evening.
A wide range of sports groups were in attendance ranging from Golf, Cricket, Karate, Boxing, Soccer, Athletics, Schools, Special Olympics and Disability Sports with the venue almost packed to capacity.
The G.A.A. were also well represented at the event and at the end of a very enjoyable evening four of them picked up deserving awards for their success and contribution.
Aghyaran St Davog’s Juvenile girls won the Young Team of the Year Award after winning the 2014 Tyrone Grade 1 Juvenile League and Championship titles which was an amazing achievement for such a small catchment area.
St Patrick’s Primary School Newtownstewart accompanied by their teacher Fabian McGlone clinched the School Team of the Year Award after winning the Tyrone Indoor Football title and several other pieces of silverware during 2014.
Strabane Shamrock’s and Tyrone hurler Gerard Gilmore lifted a Special Award for his outstanding achievements in 2014 which included captaining his club side to a Tyrone Junior Championship title, helping Tyrone win the Allianz League Division 3B League, winning the Nicky Rackard Cup and capping it off by receiving a Nicky Rackard All Star Award.
Strabane Sigersons Honorary Vice-President and lifelong Gael Raymond Kirk also received a Special Award for his contribution to Gaelic games over the course of the past sixty years. Raymond originally a native of Urney played a massive role in the promotion of the G.A.A. in Strabane for many decades during some very tough and turbulent times. His achievements included coaching Strabane to a Tyrone Grade 1 Juvenile Championship title in 1968 and winning the West Tyrone Junior League and Championship titles with Strabane Lámh Dhearg in 1973. In addition to his coaching roles, Raymond was also a referee, an administrator at club and county level and is widely known and respected the length and breadth of Tyrone and beyond for his tireless work on behalf of the G.A.A.
The award to Raymond was very fitting for his vast years of service to the G.A.A. at club and county levels on many fronts and he received warm applause from the packed attendance.
