Strabane Sigersons GAA Club are no strangers to highlighting important health issues within their club and the event facilitated by the club last week is more evidence of this.
“Darkness Into Light” is the flagship fundraising and awareness event for Pieta House and suicidal awareness and self-harm which has growing over the last nine years.
The 5km walk/run, took place last Saturday morning in Strabane with hundreds of people starting at 4.15am and finishing in the early morning light.  Club Health and Wellbeing Officer Ciaran McLaughlin said: “We are delighted with the turn out for this event, this is the first time we as a club have facilitated the ‘Darkness to Light’ Walk. Walking from the darkness into light signifies, that no matter how desperate circumstances may seem, there is hope and there is help and we would encourage anyone who is in distress to speak to someone”
Pieta House is a Suicide and Self-Harm Crisis Centre which offers support and advice service not only to those at risk but also to their families.  In 2006 the first centre was opened by psychologist Joan Freeman in Lucan.  Since then eight more centres have opened in Ballyfermot, Bishopstown, Castleisland, Finglas, Mungret, Roscrea, Tallaght and Tuam with plans to open further centres in Donegal, Waterford and Westmeath.
