A hundred years ago Tyrone was awash with Volunteers, the Irish Volunteers on the nationalist side and the Ulster Volunteers on the unionist side. These were people of character, principle and belief. Their stories are fascinating. But how many of us know those stories and have an understanding of what happened here and why?
Tyrone GAA (with support from Omagh District Council’s Good Relations Programme assisted by OFMDFM) is running a special event at its Garvaghey GAA Centre on Thursday 5 June. Aptly entitled ‘The Tyrone Volunteers’, the evening event, starting at 8.00pm sharp, will examine, analyse and celebrate those Tyrone men and women.
“One of the reasons we built Garvaghey in the form it’s in was to hold events like this” Liam Nelis who chaired the original Garvaghey Project Group explained. “Tyrone is our place and what happened here is important to all of us. This event is about developing our understanding of a critical time in the history of our County.”
People attending the ‘Tyrone Volunteers’ event will hear two talks. One will be from Dungannon’s Dr Fergal McCluskey who is about to launch a book on precisely this period in Tyrone’s history. The second talk will be from the Friends of the Somme (Mid-Ulster Branch) who have a wealth of information, stories and material about Tyrone’s original Ulster Volunteers.
For those who care about Tyrone and our people here who went before us, this will be an innovative, entertaining and revealing session.
The event is free of charge. Light refreshments will be served.
