ALL-IRELAND SFC ROUND 3B QUALIFIER: TIPPERARY 0-7 TYRONE 0-19
By Jackie Cahill at Semple Stadium
Mickey Harte’s Tyrone claimed a comfortable 12-point victory over Tipperary in this afternoon’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Round 3B qualifier at Semple Stadium.
The Red Hands illustrated the gulf in class between Divisions I and III this year by outscoring the hosts by 0-12 to 0-1 in a one-sided second half.
Tyrone led by 0-7 to 0-6 at half-time but blew Tipp away after the break, despite playing against the breeze.
And a bad day for the Premier County went from bad to worse as Liam Casey was red-carded two minutes after coming on for a stamping offence, before Ciaran McDonald received a black card.
Tipp also had seven players booked (Tyrone three) in a game that was billed as a grudge match following the All-Ireland U21 final meeting between the sides.
But it was Tyrone who held their heads to book a place in round 4B – with captain Sean Cavanagh and Peter Harte leading the charge in front of 4620 spectators.
A melee broke out before half time, which saw four players booked, and tempers threatened to boil over as both teams made their way off the pitch at half-time.
But Tyrone emerged to get the job done in clinical fashion, with a performance that was up a notch or two on their stuttering victory over Meath. The hosts managed just one point in the entire second half – a 66th minute Kevin O’Halloran free – as Tyrone clicked through the gears.
And yet the sides were level at 0-4 apiece by the 19th minute as Tipp recovered from falling three points down to level. O’Halloran was in good form from placed balls but Tipp were finding it difficult to break through the massed Tyrone ranks.
Mickey Harte’s men packed bodies behind the ball and broke with pace when they had the opportunities to do so. And once they got into their stride in the second half, they were simply too good for Division 3 opponents.
