Clubs in Tyrone have been urged to increase their awareness of the issues surrounding suicide and to become alert to those who may be struggling.

The Tyrone GAA Health and Wellbeing Committee have arranged a course aimed at helping coaches and other club members identify those at risk and provide support.

SafeTALK’ is being delivered in Garvaghey on Wednesday 30th November at 7pm, and anyone over the age of 15 can participate.

SafeTALK is a certified training programme delivered throughout Ireland.  It prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to appropriate help.

The course is part of a range of Tyrone Health and Wellbeing priorities for 2016, through which clubs are being asked to encourage their coaches and members to participate in.

Ciaran McLaughlin, Secretary of the Tyrone Health and Wellbeing Committee said:

“Tyrone clubs have over the last number of years been proactive in how they approach the subject of suicide.

“They have one of the highest numbers of participants on the course. Through participating in the training participants have become better equipped to identify the signs for risk of suicide and apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep Safe) to connect friends/colleagues to support.”

The course takes place in the Garvaghey Centre on Wednesday 30th November at 7pm.  Any coaches or club members who are interested in attending are asked to email hwb@tyronegaa.ie
