Allianz Football League Division I: Tyrone 2-15 Mayo 0-15
Tyrone’s unbeaten start to their Division I league campaign continued at Healy Park on Sunday afternoon when they emerged worthy winners over Mayo in a keenly contested clash.
Tyrone led 1-9 to 0-6 at the end of a free flowing first half that was played at lightning pace. Cathal Carolan and Darren McCurry traded early points as did Keith Higgins and Mattie Donnelly to leave it 0-2 apiece after six minutes.
The home side then got on top with Donnelly, McCurry and Ronan O’Neill causing the Mayo defence all sorts of problems. Donnelly and McCurry both took fine points although home keeper Niall Morgan pulled off a brilliant save to deny Carolan.
In the 21st minute Tyrone struck for a well worked goal when McCurry hammered the ball to the roof of the net after a build up involving Conan Grugan, Colm Cavanagh and Peter Harte. Mayo were in trouble as they trailed 1-6 to 0-2 but they then enjoyed a purple patch.
Lee Keegan, Gallagher and McLoughlin all split the posts as the visitors stayed in touch. McCurry then converted Tyrone’s only free of the opening period with Donnelly taking his personal haul to five for the half. Morgan was then called into action again to thwart McLoughlin while at the other end of the field Red Hands defender Tiarnan McCann was caught in two minds when he tried to place Donnelly for a goal and the opportunity passed.
McCurry had the opening score of the second half before substitute Connor McAliskey got his name on the scoresheet as well. To their credit though, the visitors fought back thanks mainly to the accurate free taking of Adam Gallagher as they closed the gap to two points by the 51st minute.
Tyrone though refused to panic with half back Ciaran McGinley pushing forward to score twice and Morgan converting a long range free. With seven minutes left to play the game was over as a contest when McCurry rifled the ball to the roof of the net for his second goal of the afternoon after good approach play from McGinley.
By that stage Seán Cavanagh was on the field for his first appearance of the campaign as Tyrone made it three points from their first two outings.
