Tyrone players bid for major weekend title wins
A host of Tyrone players will go in search of major victories this weekend with the All Ireland Adult championship semi finals on Saturday and followed by the Ulster Juvenile Finals on Sunday. Beragh plays host on Saturday to the Ladies Minor Singles Championship semi final, which will see Tyrone Senior Champion, Maeve McElduff, take on Kildare’s Katy Dagg in her bid to make the All Ireland minor final. The same will also apply to Johnny Woods as he stakes his claim for All Ireland Minor Boys championship success and he will meet Meath’s Robert Fox. The line-up is completed with a top class Intermediate Singles semi final in which last weekend’s Ulster Intermediate championship winner, Shane O’Neill, takes on Kilkenny’s Peter Funchion.
Loughmacrory will also host an All Ireland double bill at 1pm on Saturday. Lisa McAleer will put her fancied All Ireland Ladies Intermediate credentials on the cards when she faces Westmeath’s Aoife McCarthy. That forms part of a double bill as Chris Curran faces Kilkenny’s Stephen Barcoe in the Masters B Singles Championship semi final. Conor McElduff has a big chance in the Under 21 Singles Championship but he has a tough test in Leixlip against last year’s All Ireland Intermediate champion, Kildare’s Niall O’Connor. Carrickmore’s Ryan Daly will be hoping to maintain his excellent form when he travels to Coolgreaney in Wexford to face Wicklow’s Jerome Willoughby in the All Ireland Junior Singles semi final. Loughmacrory’s Ciaran Curran has sustained injury at the weekend and has been forced to withdraw from his eagerly awaited Masters semi final against Ducksy Walsh.

Four more Ulster championship triumphs for Tyrone
Breacach’s Shane O’Neill made it back-to-back title successes in the Ulster Intermediate Singles Championship today in Armagh. In his hugely impressive 21-4, 21-3 win against Carrickmore’s Caolan Daly, O’Neill has certainly sent out a very strong indication of his credentials in this year’s race for the prestigious All Ireland honours in this grade. While Daly may not have been at full strength, having picked up a quad injury a week ago in the US Collegiates, there is no doubting that Shane O’Neill will be among the frontrunners for the All Ireland Intermediate singles honours, won only once previously by Tyrone.
O’Neill lost in the final twelve months ago to Kildare’s Niall O’Connor and next Saturday evening will meet Kilkenny’s Peter Funchion in the All Ireland semi final in Beragh. Cork’s Shane Hedigan and Mayo’s Ollie Cassidy will meet in the other semi final in that grade.
Rory Grogan and Seamus McCrory teamed up for an excellent Ulster Masters B Doubles Championship final win in Tydavnet on Sunday. The duo lost out to last year’s All Ireland finalists, Cavan’s Jimmy McKeown and Brendan McCormack, in a tough opening game by 21-19. But their greater fitness and power play eventually saw them turn the tide and they went on to win the second 21-14 and they claimed the title with a 21-12 win in the deciding third game. That win means a clean sweep for Tyrone in the Masters grades in Ulster. Rory and Seamus will now go forward to contest the All Ireland semi finals on the weekend of 15th/16th March.
At the same venue, Eamon McCrory and Jack Campbell teamed up in the Ulster Junior B Doubles Championship final and had a tough encounter with Cavan’s Cormac McMahon and Daryl Dolan. However it was to be another final defeat for McCrory, who has been in excellent form this term, as they lost out 21-16, 21-13.
Kenny Curran and Finbar Fullen lost out in the Ulster Silver Masters B Doubles Championship final on Sunday in Armagh, going to a tie-break game before eventually falling to Antrim’s Stephen Brady and Kevin McParland. Curran and Fullen were flying in the opening game with good finishing seeing them win 21-15 but prolonged rallies saw a surge by the Antrim pair in the second and they went on to take the title 21-12, 21-8.
Midweek had already seen Conal Curran and Martin Toner team up for a very impressive win in the Mens 35+ B Doubles championship final, overcoming Cavan in emphatic style by 21-4, 21-2. They will now meet Kilkenny in the All Ireland semi final on the weekend of 15th/16th March.
In the Ulster Junior Doubles Championship last Thursday, Carrickmore’s Ryan Daly completed an eye-catching clean sweep in the grade when he teamed up with Patrick McCrory to collect the honours in Armagh. They lost the opening game 21-19 against Down’s Paul Shields and Sean Digney but came back to win the second 21-17 and took the title with a 21-16 win in the third tie-break game.
There are two remaining Ulster Doubles Championship finals to be decided. Johnny woods has already won the Minor singles title and teams up with Ryan Mullan in the Ulster Minor doubles final against Monaghan. The Under 21 doubles final will see Conor McElduff bid for his doubles in the grade as he teams up with Gabhain McCrystal against Antrim on Tuesday evening.

Tyrone Juvenile B Championships completed
The Tyrone Attic Stairs Juvenile B Singles Championship Finals Day took place in Loughmacrory on Saturday and provided another great day of handball as the curtain is set to come down on the club 40×20 season. Following yesterday’s 8 final programme, that leaves just three finals to play.
The day opened with the Girls Under 10 B Singles final and brought a fine win for Loughmacrory’s Dearbhail Fox against talented young Breacach player, Bronagh McWilliams. Dearbhail’s consistency and shooting at front court saw her win out on a 11-4, 11-0 scoreline. In the Boys Under 10 B Singles final, Breacach’s Patrick McCann got off to a great start and lead by 8-4 in the opening game. However, Loughmacrory’s Gary McAleer made a terrific comeback with excellent retrieves from back court and came back to win 11-9 and he secured the title with an 11-7 win in the second.
The Girls Under 12 B Singles final was an all Breacach contest and saw Charlene Shortt secure her first county medal with a 15-8, 15-2 win over her club colleague Seana Clarke. Cappagh claimed their first Juvenile title of the season when Brian McAleer delivered an impressive display to capture the Boys Under 12 B Singles Championship title. He overcame Carrickmore’s Fintan McNamee on a 15-4, 15-1 scoreline.
The Boys Under 13 B Singles Championship final brought an all Loughmacrory decider as Diarmuid Gallagher and Patrick Curran won through their respective sections. In the final it was a very impressive display from Diarmuid Gallagher which secured him the honours on a 15-3, 15-3 scoreline. The Girls Under 14 B Singles Championship final saw Carrickmore’s Bronagh Allison get off to an excellent start as she powered her way into a 6-0 lead in the opening game. However, Breacach’s Meabh McCrystal bounced back with some excellent serving in particular helping her through to a first title win on a 15-8, 15-4 scoreline.
The penultimate final of the day was the Boys Under 15 B Singles championship final and was an all Loughmacrory decider involving Colm Logue and Cathaoir Gallagher. This proved to be one of the best games of the day as there was little to choose between the two much improved players for most of the contest. However, decisive shooting at the end of each game saw the match go in favour of Colm Logue on a 15-11, 15-11 score. Juvenile B Singles Championship final day concluded with the only tie-break match of the programme. Breacach’s Turlough Clarke would have been very well fancied in his meeting with Loughmacrory’s Shane McCrystal. However, in the opening game, McCrystal’s terrific running and retrieving proved crucial as he won 15-8. Clarke then began to find his range with excellent corner killshots in the second game and he levelled the match with a 15-7 victory. The tie-break was keenly contested early on but it was then that McCrystal broke away with impressive resilience seeing him carve out his first county singles title win by 11-4 in that tie-break.
This leaves just three County titles to be decided in the 2014 Tyrone Attic Stairs Championships. The Tyrone Attic Stairs Juvenile Championships for 2014 will conclude on this Saturday 8th March at 12.30pm in Loughmacrory with the Boys Under 10 Doubles Championship final, which will be contested by Breacach’s Conor Owens and Patrick McCann against Loughmacrory’s Eoin McElholm and Ronan Fox. Next up will be the Mens Minor Singles championship final as Johnny Woods faces Carrickmore’s Ryan Mullan. The action will then conclude with the last County final of the 40×20 season with the Mens Open Senior Doubles Championship final.
