Tyrone GAA welcomes the coroner’s, Mr Justice Kinney, decision to call on the Secretary of State to set up a Public Inquiry into the circumstance of the death of Sean Brown.
The continued refusal of access to justice by state agencies is something that is called out by the British Government in other jurisdictions worldwide. We remind them, the people under every part of their jurisdiction are entitled to and should be afforded the same level of justice that they call for elsewhere in the world.
The coroner has concluded that he could not comply with his statutory duty to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Brown’s death. An “inquest that would be incomplete, inadequate and misleading” is not what the Brown family or any other family deserve. We concur with the coroner Mr Justice McKinney and call for an independent inquiry. In addition we express our solidarity with the Brown family and indeed all families who are impacted by the callous guillotine effects of the Legacy Act.
