Four All Ireland Colleges triumphs for Tyrone schools
Tyrone GAA Handball had another highly successful day on Saturday on the national stage when 3 schools secured All Ireland gold medal success with 4 All Ireland title wins and one runners-up spot on the day. Recently crowned Tyrone Open Singles champion, Maeve McElduff, showed impressive form to win the Ladies Senior Singles crown while the O’Neill County enjoyed a clean sweep at Senior ladies level when Aoife Kelly and Eilise McCrory teamed up for Dean Maguirc College to win the senior doubles honours. Sean Kerr ensured a double All Ireland success for the Carrickmore school when he collected in the Junior Singles and Pauric Mullan and Turlough teamed up to take the All Ireland junior doubles honours to the Omagh CBS. Pol Clarke and Niall Allison reached the final of the Senior boys doubles but lost out to a very strong Wexford side in that final.

Tyrone players in Ulster title deciders
A host of Tyrone players are in line for Ulster Singles Championship triumphs in the weekend ahead following one month of highly competitive action right across the province. On Friday evening in Beragh the finals action gets underway as Loughmacrory’s Chris Curran and Carrickmore’s Rory Grogan cam through a field of 18 to contest the Masters singles final. Then on Saturday a total of 6 more players will line out in Ulster finals. There will be a triple bill in Monaghan on Saturday at 2pm where Breacach’s Michelle Warren challenges for the Ulster Junior B Singles honours and that is followed by Eamonn McCrory’s bid for the Ulster Junior B Singles Championship crown, this grade having had over 40 players at the start of the series. Ryan Daly will then take on Monaghan’s Terry Kiernan in the Junior Singles decider to conclude the programme.
In Saval (Down) both Kenny Curran and Niall Kerr will be hoping for a clean sweep for the county in the Silver Masters grade as they take on Antrim opposition in the B and A Singles finals respectively from 2pm while Loughmacrory will host one of the most eagerly awaited ties of the day in the Under 21 Singles Championship final from 5pm as Conor McElduff takes on recent Senior Colleges Champion, Darren Doherty of Monaghan.

McElduff claims first Tyrone Ladies Senior Championship title
Breacach’s Maeve McElduff became the first ever winner of the Tyrone Ladies Open Senior Singles Championship when she defeated Loughmacrory’s Lisa McAleer in a thrilling inaugural final at Beragh on Saturday evening.
McAleer was on fire in the early stages and her powerful low serving and pass and kill-shots had McElduff on the back foot for much of the opening game. The Loughmacrory player took that opening game 21-5 but a more measured defensive approach by the Breacach star in the second began to pay dividends. McElduffs strong play on the ceiling and pinpoint long range shooting saw her seize control at that point and saw her claim the second game 21-7.
The tie-break proved finely balanced for much of the way and they were deadlocked at 7-7 and following a long series of super rallies, found themselves with four serves each with the score at 9-8 in favour of McElduff. Maeve held out though with strong centre-court play and claimed the first ever honours, and the Brenda Logue Memorial Cup, on an 11-8 tie-break scoreline.
This was undoubtedly a great opening series in the newly introduced Ladies Open Championships in Tyrone and would suggest that both Maeve and Lisa can have a big season ahead in the upcoming 40×20 All Ireland championships.
