Killyclogher will be the place to be on Saturday morning as Tyrone GAA welcome’s All Ireland Senior Hurling winning manager Liam Sheedy to a day totally dedicated to Ireland’s oldest sport. All football fixtures and underage blitzes have been cancelled to clear the way for what promises to be an excellent opportunity to learn more about how the game can be nurtured here in Tyrone.
Hurling in Tyrone has seen somewhat of an upward increase in popularity and that trend looks certain to continue with the news that Tipperary’s All Ireland winning Hurling Manager Liam Sheedy and GAA’s National Hurling Coordinator Paudie Butler are to act as mentors for the development of Hurling in Tyrone.
County Board Chairman Ciaran McLaughlin stated that “the aim of this programme is to significantly increase the participation and enjoyment of playing and learning the game of hurling for children between the ages of 7 and 13 years of age. If we can do that then we’ve achieved something tangible and something that can be built upon. We’re delighted to have two men of the calibre of Liam Sheedy and Paudie Butler involved”.
Tyrone Hurling Officer Brendan Harkin is also pleased to be getting the first Hurling Development day up and running. “The game of hurling is more than just a game. It’s something that is woven deeply into the social fabric of Irish people and that very much includes GAA people here on Tyrone. The Hurling Development day in Killyclogher on Saturday 12th May will offer U12’s from all clubs in
Tyrone the opportunity to pick up a hurl and learn from two of Ireland’s greatest coaches”.
Each Club has been requested to selected ten players to attend the coaching session with Paudie Butler on Saturday. All children participating in this session are requested to be on the pitch for 11am, the session will conclude at 12:15pm. Please ensure that the parents of these children also attend the session. All children are requested to bring their own hurl and helmet. Due to U10 football blitzes being on this Saturday, each Club can bring U12 players if struggling to get enough U10 players to attend.
Registration / Refreshments will be served at 9:30am.
At registration (9:30am-9:40am) a ticket will be given to all those in attendance for a free draw to win two tickets to the 2012 All Ireland Hurling Finals. Only those who register during the above time will receive a ticket for the draw.Mentoring Programme Day 1 –
