DOWD CUP
TYRONE 5-12
DOWN 1-10
A new look Tyrone opened their Dowd cup campaign on Sunday with a confident performance and 5-12 to 1-10 win over Down. New manager Gerald Moane had indicated he would start his reign with a clean slate for everyone and that appears to be the mantra for Tyrone 2012. There were several debutants both in the starting 15 and in Moanes matchday squad with of course a raft of players unavailable to the Fermanagh native with their involvement with the University squads. Tyrone have been hit hardest by players lining out with the “Uni’s” but rather that let it get him down the affable Moane, who has had upwards on fifty players involved in pre-season training since his appointment, admits those absentees will afford the new players a chance to stake a claim for the forthcoming national league and championship campaigns.
Tyrone led throughout the encounter at Trillick on Sunday and by the break had a six point advantage with Gemma Begley scoring 2-1 and Fiona McCarney hitting 1-1 on her debut. Down had huffed and puffed in the opening half but with Tyrone’s backline solid they only managed 0-4 in a second period dominated by Tyrone. McCarney and talisman score getter Cathy Donnelly added further Tyrone majors and they were always in control. Moane opted for second half changes too, Omagh duo Hayley Ballard and Colleen McCullagh and Cappaghs Terri McCusker joined Nicola Donnelly and Zoe Loughran as second half replacements, none of the new faces looking out of place as Tyrone got 2012 with a deserved win.
Tyrone will welcome Armagh on Sunday as the group stages continue in the competition.
