Report from www.gaa.ie
Tyrone maintained their impressive form in Division II of the Allianz Football League, securing their fourth straight win in the competition with a nine-point defeat of Westmeath at Healy Park, Omagh on Saturday night. Two goals either side of half-time, a Peter Harte penalty and an explosive finish from full forward Martin Penrose, helped Mickey Harte’s side to a straightforward win, which leaves them comfortably on top of the Division II table.Tyrone dominated from the first whistle, with Owen Mulligan pointing in the first minute, while Kyle Coney did his hopes of permanent inclusion in attack no harm with three classy points in the opening quarter.
The home side raced into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead with a Damian McCaul score, before the Lake men finally got off the mark in the 28th minute, substitute Dennis Glennon hitting the target. It was temporary relief, though, as Tyrone inflicted further damage just before the break, when Peter Harte smashed a left-footed penalty high to the roof of the net, leaving Westmeath goalkeeper Gary Connaughton with no chance.A John Heslin fee left seven points between the sides at the break, but the game was all but over as a contest when the visitors lost the ball from the restart and Penrose ran at their defence, before drilling a low shot to the back of the net for his second goal of the League campaign.
Ronan Foley and Ger Egan hit back with points for Pat Flanagan’s side, while Dennis Glennon brought his tally to 0-3, but when man-of-the-match Coney hit his fourth score from play, any hopes of a late Westmeath revival were extinguished.Westmeath, who remain anchored to the bottom of the table, saw their miserable evening end on a sour note when sub Mark Gorman was shown a second yellow card in the final minute.
