The Tyrone county under 16s travelled to Stradone in County Cavan on Saturday to play Cavan in the Ulster shield final. The team were kitted out in their new sponsored jerseys for the first time this year.
It was a very tight contest for the first ten minutes as the teams traded scores, however continued pressure from Cavan resulted in a one sided score-line as the half progressed. Cavan were very potent in front of goals despite the heroic efforts of the Tyrone keeper Aisling Mclaughin. The half ended with Cavan having a substantial lead of 8-4 to 1-6.
Tyrone made a few changes at the start of the second half. Cavan continued the second half with some fine performances from their midfield and took three early points. The game took on a whole new meaning when Tyrones Roisin mcErlean scored two goals and a point in two minutes with Leanne Donnelly adding another goal for the red hands with fifteen minutes left of the half. The game then got very tight between the sides before Cavan added another goal and a point near the end. Full Time Cavan 9-9 Tyrone 4-7.
Maura McGurren vice chairperson of Ulster camogie presented the winning shield to Cavan captain Ciara Finnegan.
The Tyrone county board would like to thank the management
of the team for their work with the squad over the past few months. The parents and supporters who made the long journey from all corners of the Province should be proud of the display from the girls. A special thanks goes to Niall Jackman who took time out to video the game.
