Few people can or will ever match the quality, the quantity, or the significance of Eddie Devlin’s contributions to the Tyrone GAA cause.
Níl mórán daoine ann a rinne an oiread sin oibre, idir ardchaighdeán agus líon na hoibre, is a rinne Eddie Ó Doibhlin, ar son CLG Thír Eoghain.
Quite simply a serial GAA history maker, Eddie made that history at Schools (St Patrick’s College, Armagh ), Club (Coalisland Fianna), County, University (UCD) and Provincial levels.
A three-time Macrory Cup Champion and a Hogan Cup winner, he was a ‘four-year Minor’ for Tyrone, Captained us to two All-Ireland Minor titles, and was central to Tyrone’s Ulster Senior breakthroughs of 1956 and 1957, Captaining us in 1957.Before Eddie came along, Tyrone’s County achievements amounted to two Ulster Minor titles and one Lagan Cup. By the time he was finished with us, he’d helped add three more Ulster Minors, two All-Ireland Minors, two Ulster Seniors, two Lagan Cups, and a McKenna Cup.
Ba pheileadóir órga é Eddie Ó Doibhlin inár gcéad ghlúin órga. Ba pheileadóir ar leith é agus é ina laochra ar an pháirc.
Eddie Devlin was a golden player in our first golden generation. Unquestionably both an artist and a warrior of the game, he played with class, commitment, guile and honour, always a ‘go-to’ man on every one of his teams. His presence was our blessing.
Ár gcomhbhrón ó bhun ár gcroí lena theaghlach, a chuid cairde agus do Ghaeil Oileán an Ghuail.
Our deepest sympathy goes to Owen, Rosemary and Alice, to his wide family circle, to his many friends and associates, and to the Gaels of Coalisland.
‘I measc Naomh na Éireann agus Laochra na nGael go raibh a anam uasal | May his noble soul rest among the Saints of Ireland and the Heroes of the Gael.’
