Ulster Minor Football Championship – Round 1
Tyrone 2-19, Fermanagh 0-3
Tyrone made a strong start to their Ulster Minor Football Championship campaign with a comprehensive win over Fermanagh in Round 1 this afternoon.
The game opened with a flurry of early scores from the Red Hands, as they established a firm grip on proceedings. Points from Eoin Long, Joel Kerr, James Mulgrew, Aodhan Quinn and Peter Garrity saw them build momentum in the opening quarter, before Garrity’s goal on 17 minutes gave them further breathing space.
Fermanagh registered their first score after 12 minutes but found it difficult to create clear scoring opportunities against a well-organised Tyrone defence. A two-point effort from Eoin Long and a late first-half goal from the same player helped Tyrone into a commanding 2-11 to 0-1 lead at the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Tyrone adding a string of scores through Thomas Meenan, James Mulgrew and Joel Kerr. Fermanagh continued to battle and were rewarded with two late points, but the result had long been settled.
Team Coach Ciaran Gourley was happy with the performance: “We did a lot of things well but there’s plenty we can work on. There will be tougher challenges ahead.”
“We’ve been reaping the dividends of the work done in training. The defence set us up with a good platform and we know what our forwards are capable of against any opposition.”
Both sides will now turn their focus to the next stages of the competition, with Tyrone progressing to Round 2 against Cavan and Fermanagh hoping to regroup for the qualifiers.
